Overview
Project Cost: $3,400,000
The Arizona Department of Transportation is initiating a pavement preservation project on State Route 73 approximately 20 miles south of Pinetop-Lakeside on the Fort Apache Indian Reservation (mileposts 350-358). The project is scheduled to begin this summer and be completed in late 2022.
Project Elements
The proposed work consists of installing a cape seal treatment, replacing pavement markings and other related work.
What to Expect During Construction
SR 73 will be reduced to one lane only in the work zone with alternating north- and southbound travel controlled by flaggers and a pilot car.

SR 73 narrowed to one lane only of alternating travel south of Pinetop-Lakeside beginning Aug. 15
Drivers should expect delays
The Arizona Department of Transportation advises drivers to plan for the following travel restriction on State Route 73 between Black Canyon and the junction with SR 260 (mileposts 350 - 358) beginning Monday, Aug. 15:
- North- and southbound SR 73 will be reduced to one lane only with alternating north- and southbound travel from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays through Fridays.
- Flaggers and a pilot car will direct traffic through the work zone.
- The speed limit will be reduced in the work zone.
- Drivers should be prepared to stop when approaching the work zone.
Additional closures and restrictions may be announced in the coming weeks as construction begins on the 8-mile pavement project, which is scheduled to be completed this fall.
