Expect daytime lane restrictions on US 160 in far northeastern Arizona beginning Tuesday, Aug. 4, for erosion control work

The Arizona Department of Transportation advises drivers to expect lane restrictions on US 160 near Mexican Water in far Northeastern Arizona on Tuesday, Aug. 4, as work begins on erosion control.

Drivers should expect the following restrictions weekdays from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m.:

  • US 160 will be reduced to one lane only with alternating east- and westbound travel between mileposts 439 and 440.

  • Onsite flaggers will direct traffic through the work zone.

  • Drivers need to be prepared to make frequent stops when approaching and driving through the work zone and use caution around construction personnel and equipment while the restrictions are in place. 

  • Restrictions will be lifted each day after work hours. No work is scheduled on weekends.

This work, which is part of the 24-mile long pavement rehabilitation project between the communities of Dennehotso and Mexican Water, is scheduled to be completed by early September.

Overview

Project Cost: $19.7 million

The Arizona Department of Transportation, in partnership with the Navajo Nation, has initiated a pavement rehabilitation project along US 160 in far northeast Arizona. The 24-mile-long project is roughly between the communities of Dennehotso and Mexican Water. 

Construction is currently underway and will be completed in September 2026.

Project Elements

  • Remove and replace the top-pavement surface along US 160 in both directions between mileposts 416 and 440.
  • Remove existing bridge rail on the Walker Creek Bridge near the Mexican Water Trading Post (milepost 435) and replace it with concrete barrier.
  • Replace guardrail, install centerline rumble strips, build up shoulders, replace cattle guards and pave turnouts within ADOT right-of-way in the project area.
  • Complete paving with a chip seal treatment and new permanent pavement markings.
  • Perform erosion control work near milepost 440.

What to Expect During Construction

US 160 will be reduced to one lane only in segments with alternating east- and westbound travel during construction. Vehicles will be directed through the work zone by flaggers. Work will take place weekdays from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. No work is planned on weekends or holidays. A 12-foot vehicle-width restriction will be in place during paving operations.

Drivers should plan for extra travel time and watch for construction workers and equipment while traveling through the area.
