Overview

Project Cost: $3.1 million

The Arizona Department of Transportation, in partnership with the Navajo Nation, has initiated a safety improvement project along US 163 north of Kayenta on the Navajo Nation in far Northeast Arizona. 

Construction will begin Wednesday, April 23, and be completed by late summer.

Project Elements:

  • Widen shoulders to 5 feet along US 163 in both directions between mileposts 404 and 406.

  • Install centerline and shoulder rumble strips within the project area.

  • Extend pipe work, install signage and other related work.

What to Expect During Construction

US 163 will be reduced to one lane only with alternating north- and southbound travel during construction. Vehicles will be directed through the work zone by flaggers and a pilot car. Work will take place Mondays through Thursdays between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. DST. No work is planned on weekends or holidays.

Drivers should plan for extra travel time and watch for construction workers and equipment while traveling through the area.
