The Arizona Department of Transportation advises drivers to plan for lane restrictions on State Route 85 between Elota Avenue (milepost 42) and milepost 60 weekdays from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. beginning Monday, June 15, through spring 2027 as a new pavement rehabilitation project gets underway in Ajo and Why.

Motorists can expect the following restrictions:

  • Flagging operations in the project area
  • Rolling lane restrictions as crews work in multiple sections each day 
  • A 12-foot vehicle width restriction 
  • 25 mph speed limit in the work zone

Drivers should allow extra travel time, use caution, be prepared to slow down and merge safely when approaching and traveling through all work zones.

Overview

The Arizona Department of Transportation is scheduled to begin a pavement preservation project in the spring of 2026 on State Route 85 from Elota Avenue to milepost 60 in Ajo.

What to Expect

  • Traffic along SR 85 will be maintained. Lane closures are anticipated during the pavement work.
  • Traffic control devices will guide motorists through the construction area.
  • Construction work is tentatively scheduled from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday.
  • Drivers can expect temporary delays as traffic is redirected through a single travel lane.
  • ADOT will provide advance notice of restrictions and closures to email subscribers.

Schedule

Construction on this project is anticipated to begin in the spring of 2026 and is anticipated to be completed early 2027. Schedules are subject to change due to weather and other unforeseen circumstances.
