Overview
The Arizona Department of Transportation is scheduled to begin a pavement preservation project in early May 2026 on State Route 85 from milepost 42 (Elota Avenue), in Ajo, to milepost 60, approximately 7 miles south of Why.

- Milling and repaving of the roadway surface
- Installing fog coating to the roadway and bridge
- Replacing the guardrail
- Constructing ADA ramps at the intersection of Elota Avenue and SR 85
What to Expect
- Traffic along SR 85 will be maintained. Lane closures are anticipated during the pavement work.
- Traffic control devices will guide motorists through the construction area.
- Construction work is tentatively scheduled from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday.
- Drivers can expect temporary delays as traffic is redirected through a single travel lane.
- ADOT will provide advance notice of restrictions and closures to email subscribers.
Schedule
Construction on this project is anticipated to begin early May 2026 and is projected to be completed in early 2027. Schedules are subject to change due to weather and other unforeseen circumstances
