Historic Queen Creek Bridge
Historic Queen Creek Bridge
- The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) as part of National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) Section 106 requirements has determined through project consultation that as a result of the project undertaking, ADOT will have an “Adverse Effect” on the Historic Queen Creek Bridge. ADOT is evaluating options to address the Adverse Effects as part of Section 106 requirements.
- Built in 1949, the current Queen Creek Bridge (Structure #406) is an historic, in-use structure designed by the Arizona Highway Department. The structure is a four-span bridge, with a riveted steel, two-hinge, girder-ribbed deck arch. Past historic ADOT documentation has described the bridge as an "outstanding, well-preserved example of rare, long-span structural type," and recommended it as eligible for the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) under Criterion A.
- In addition to addressing the Adverse Effects under Section 106, ADOT is in the process of completing a Section 4(f) evaluation for this project in accordance with National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA). Section 4(f) applies to federally funded transportation projects and requires consideration of
- parks and recreational areas of national, state or local significance that are both publicly owned and open to the public.
- publicly owned wildlife and waterfowl refuges of national, state or local
- significance that are open to the public to the extent that public access does not interfere with the primary purpose of the refuge.
- historic sites of national, state or local significance in public or private
- ownership regardless of whether they are open to the public.
- Queen Creek is considered a Section 4(f) property for its historic significance and will be impacted by construction of the new bridge and eventual deconstruction of the historic bridge. Thus, a Section 4(f) property will be impacted as part of this project. The FHWA Programmatic Section 4(f) Evaluation and Approval for FHWA Projects That Necessitate the Use of Historic Bridges report for the Queen Creek Bridge will be completed in February 2023.
- ADOT is seeking questions or comments related to the project and project effects by Feb. 17, 2023. Comments can be communicated directly to the project team by submitting the following form.
