US 191 Cochise Railroad Overpass Bridge Replacement Project
Overview
The Arizona Department of Transportation is replacing the Cochise Railroad Overpass Bridge on US 191 between mileposts 62 and 63.8, near Cochise. Construction on this project began in December 2025 and is expected to continue through spring 2028.
Project Schedule
Construction on this project began in December 2025 and will continue through spring 2028. This project is being built in phases. Schedules are subject to change because of weather and other unforeseen circumstances.
- Phase 1: Crews will build a new bridge over the Union Pacific Railroad approximately 100-200 feet to the southwest of the existing bridge.
- Phase 2: Crews will connect US 191 to the new bridge and reroute traffic beginning in summer 2027.
- Phase 3: After traffic is rerouted to the new bridges, crews will demolish the old bridge in early 2028.
Project Elements
- Construct a new concrete girder bridge over the Union Pacific Railroad.
- Remove the existing bridge in its entirety.
- Remove and replace the guardrails within the limits of the project.
- Construct a new reinforced concrete box culvert at the Walnut Wash.
What to Expect
Motorists can expect to continue traveling on the existing bridge until summer 2027. After the new bridge is constructed, temporary signals will be installed while crews connect the new bridge to the US 191 roadway.
The new constructed roadway will have an 8-foot paved shoulder in each direction and two 12-foot travel lanes.
