Drivers should plan for daytime restrictions and allow extra travel time

The Arizona Department of Transportation advises drivers to plan for east- and westbound lane restrictions on Interstate 10 in Tonopah beginning Sunday, May 4, for milling and paving. 

The following restrictions will occur nightly from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. beginning Sunday, May 4, and ending the morning of Friday, May 9:

  • East- and westbound I-10 between Salome Road and Tonopah (milepost 90) will be reduced to one lane. Note: Only one direction will be impacted at a time. Motorists should anticipate a 2 to 3-mile lane restriction while crews progress through the work zone.  
  • A 12-foot vehicle width restriction will be in place. 
  • The speed limit will be reduced to 55 mph.

The following daytime restrictions will occur from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. beginning Monday, May 5, and ending Friday, May 9:

  • Westbound I-10 will be reduced to one lane between Salome Road (milepost 80) and Tonopah (milepost 90) for guardrail installation. Note: Motorists should anticipate a 2 to 3-mile lane restriction- while crews progress through the work zone.  
  • A 12-foot vehicle width restriction will be in place.
  • The speed limit will be reduced to 55 mph. 

The following overpass restrictions will continue 24 hours a day, seven days a week through the end of May:

  • The north- and southbound Salome Road overpass will be reduced to one lane with alternating traffic control via a temporary signal.
  • An 11-foot vehicle width restriction will be in place. 
  • The speed limit will be reduced to 25 mph. 

Drivers should plan for delays, obey posted speed limits and traffic control devices and use caution around construction personnel.

Overview

The Arizona Department of Transportation and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) is scheduled to begin a project to repair the pavement on Interstate 10 between Salome Road (milepost 80) and Tonopah (milepost 90) began in late March 2025.

The work consists of removing the existing pavement surface and replacing it with new asphalt concrete and other related work.

Project Elements

  • Milling the existing pavement and replacing it with new asphalt.

  • Replacing guardrail and guardrail end terminals

  • Constructing drainage facilities

  • Bridge repairs and replacement of concrete bridge barrier

  • Replacing pavement markings, signage, and fencing

Project Schedule

  • Construction began in late March 2025 and is expected to take 11 months to complete.

  • To minimize traffic impacts, milling and paving work is tentatively scheduled to occur from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. on weekdays. Other related work will take place during the day, which will require lane restrictions.
