Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Feature Upgrades

Overview

The Arizona Department of Transportation, in coordination with the Federal Highway Administration, upgraded sidewalks, curb ramps and driveways across the southwest district. ADOT evaluated existing feature conditions and upgraded approximately 120 features to comply with the latest Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) guidelines.

There were three phases to the project:

  • Phase 1 in Parker was completed in fall 2021.
  • Phase 2 in Quartzsite was completed in winter 2022.
  • Phase 3 in Gila Bend was completed July 2024.

Project Elements

The project was located in the town of Gila Bend on Interstate 8 Business Loop (Pima Street) between Weidner Street (milepost 118) and US 80 (milepost 120).

  • Crews upgraded non compliant ADA features such as sidewalk ramps, sidewalks, and driveways.
  • Work also included minor striping of the roadway.
