Drivers should expect delays and allow extra travel time

The Arizona Department of Transportation advises drivers to plan ahead for alternating lane restrictions on State Route 85 in Gila Bend, for a barrier wall installation. 

The following restrictions are scheduled to occur from 5:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 10, and Friday, Sept. 11.

  • SR 85 will be narrowed to one lane only with alternating north- and southbound travel between mileposts 4 and 6. 

  • Flaggers and a pilot car will direct motorists through the work zone.

  • The speed limit will be reduced to 25 mph within the flagging operation. 

  • A 16-foot vehicle width restriction will be in place.

Overview

The Arizona Department of Transportation is designing a project to make drainage improvements at existing concrete box culverts on State Route 85, south of Gila Bend between mileposts 4 and 6.

Project Elements

  • Extending existing box culverts at five different locations
  • Replacing existing pavement
  • Removing existing guardrail
  • Replacing existing fence
  • Placing a layer of large stones to prevent erosion
  • Installing pavement marking and other related work

Project Schedule

Construction began August 2026 and is expected to take six months to complete.
