The Art of Transportation takes you to the less-photographed side of Hoover Dam and showcases the four intake towers helping control water flow. Each measures 82 feet in diameter at the base and is nearly 400 feet high.

Hoover Dam sits on the Nevada-Arizona state line near US 93. Visit the United States Bureau of Reclamation website for additional information on Hoover Dam.

AOT South Mountain Freeway rebar cage

By John Dougherty / ADOT Communications

Cloud swirls across the sky echo the shapes of the rebar cage for a drill shaft found in the foreground of today’s Art of Transportation photo. It’s all part of the work being done to build a 3,000 foot bridge across the Salt River between Southern and Broadway roads as part of the South Mountain Freeway. The bridge in Laveen is among the first of 40 bridges planned along the freeway.

Visit the South Mountain Freeway traffic alert page for construction updates and find the construction timeline here.

Cables and rebar have created hundreds of geometric patterns set against the bright blue sky in Marana. Today's Art of Transportation was captured at the Ina Road Traffic Interchange project that will elevate Ina Road over Interstate 10 and the Union Pacific Railroad.

The $120 million project kicked into high gear in February when Ina Road closed to allow construction on the interchange. Motorists should be able to use the new bridge over I-10 in 2018.

I-10 and L303

By John Dougherty / ADOT Communications

This photo is from more than three years ago during the construction of the Loop 303 and Interstate 10 interchange in 2013. This perspective allows you to see the partially constructed ramps as they pass over I-10.

The $83 million interchange project includes several new ramps, structures/bridges, improvements at Van Buren Street and Cotton Lane, improvements to the frontage roads, rubberized asphalt and pavement markings.

Deck Park Tunnel Exhaust Fan

By John Dougherty / ADOT Communications

You might wonder what a big fan has to do with transportation, but this fan is an important component of the Interstate 10 Deck Park Tunnel. It is only one of four gigantic fans installed in each tube of the tunnel. The fans were installed in case emergency ventilation is needed. Read our other Deck Park Tunnel posts to find out more about the tunnel's history and inner workings.

Cables, rebar and concrete are woven together to create strong, lasting bridges. This is especially evident in this Art of Transportation photo where you see crews dismantling the Interstate 10 bridge over Perryville Road. And, don't forget to check out our video of the bridge being demolished.

Blue Construction Equipment

By John Dougherty / ADOT Communications

Today's Art of Transportation is for those who see beauty in unusual objects. It features construction at the Loop 303 and Interstate 10 interchange and accents of blue. The crane and portable restrooms cut striking bright blue streaks against the dirt and concrete.

This week we're taking you back a few years to 2013, just before the Chevelon Creek Bridge underwent a significant restoration.

While the bridge, along what once was the route between Winslow and Holbrook, was restored in late 2013, we think the old version doesn't look too shabby in this light with a rainbow arching across it.

The restoration process included wrapping the entire bridge in plastic to remove lead paint and prevent the paint from entering the water below. Other work included replacing the bridge deck, completing steel repairs and making modifications to the abutments.

The Chevelon Creek Bridge was built more than 100 years ago for a cost of less than $5,000! It was one of the first highway structures to be undertaken by the newly formed State of Arizona. The bridge is still an important travel route for Navajo County drivers.

Fall arrives a little later in Arizona than it does across the rest of the country. In this week's Art of Transportation, you can see a few trees near the State Route 69 and State Route 89 traffic interchange in Prescott beginning to turn orange.

The surrounding landscape is breathtaking, set beneath the Vermilion Cliffs of far northern Arizona, but the man-made Navajo Bridge is no slouch either. The bridge crosses the Colorado River on US 89A in Marble Canyon. In the photo above, you can see both the original 1929 bridge (farther back) and the new one. The original bridge is now used only for pedestrians.

If you'd like to see what the bridge looked like back in the '20s, check out this blog post.
