Lane restrictions needed as work resumes following winter shutdown

FLAGSTAFF – After a break due to the winter weather season, a project to repave and make other improvements along southbound Interstate 17 south of Flagstaff has resumed with lane restrictions starting today (Monday, April 24).

Drivers should expect lane restrictions in several areas while the pavement improvement work is underway over the next several months, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.

Southbound I-17 is currently narrowed to one lane around the clock in several locations between Flagstaff and the Munds Park area during the current stage of repaving.

ADOT recommends drivers allow extra travel time, especially during peak travel times. Motorists also should obey reduced speed limits and stay alert for workers and equipment in all work zones.

In all, the $35 million project, which started last year, will repave 29 miles of southbound I-17 between Flagstaff and the Coconino/Yavapai county line. The project also includes bridge repairs and improvements along shoulders and interchange ramps. Work is scheduled for completion by fall 2023.

Real-time highway conditions are available on ADOT’s Arizona Traveler Information site at az511.gov. ADOT also provides highway condition updates via its Twitter feed, @ArizonaDOT.

More lasting repairs underway, funds reallocated for paving projects

As warming weather allows the Arizona Department of Transportation to begin more permanent repairs to highways after a rough winter, the agency is reallocating $50.5 million to replace deteriorating pavement surfaces within 23 locations, most of them in northern Arizona. Funding for the pavement repair work comes from savings on other projects.

The State Transportation Board on Friday approved ADOT’s plan to address severe roadway deterioration on segments of I-40, I-17, I-10, US 60, SR 260 and SR 77. ADOT plans to recommend $40 million for similar projects in the agency’s 2024-2029 Five-Year Construction Program.

"I'm proud to announce an over $50 million investment in fixing our roads," said Governor Katie Hobbs. "For too long, Arizona has failed to invest the money we need to protect our highways and ensure a brighter future for all Arizonans. Snow and rain this winter exposed the lack of upkeep and I'm grateful to the State Transportation Board for identifying these projects and approving these critical investments."

The projects, which ADOT plans to begin as soon as possible, are in areas where pavement was already stressed in recent years due to age and use. The snow and rain during the record-setting winter created ideal conditions for potholes and other road surface damage in these highway stretches.

“ADOT’s goal is to deliver the safest and most reliable highway system possible with the funding we have to make improvements around the state,” ADOT State Engineer Greg Byres said. “We know these projects to improve pavement conditions are much-needed, and we will move forward as quickly as possible.”

Depending on the project, work is expected to begin from mid-May into June. These projects will consist of removing and replacing damaged surface pavement in locations within these highway stretches:

I-40

  • both directions between Needle Mountain Road and SR 95 (MP 2-9)
  • eastbound between US 93 and Silver Springs Road (MP 72-79)
  • eastbound between Willow Ranch and Fort Rock roads (MP 88-92)
  • westbound between Cross Mountain and Willow Ranch roads (MP 95-89)
  • eastbound between Fort Rock Road and Seligman (MP 92-123)
  • both directions between Seligman and Ash Fork (MP 123-146)
  • both directions between the Riordan Bridge and I-17 (MP 190-195)
  • both directions between Walnut Canyon and Townsend-Winona roads (MP 204-211)
  • both directions between SR 99 and Tucker Flat Wash (MP 242-249)
  • both directions between Pinta and McCarrell roads (MP 319.1-330.55)

I-17

  • both directions between Sunset Point and SR 69 (MP 251-263)
  • both directions between SR 69 and SR 169 (MP 266-278)
  • northbound between SR 169 and 1 mile north of SR 179 (MP 280-300)
  • southbound between Middle Verde Road and SR 169 (MP 290-280)
  • both directions between SR 179 and the Scenic Overlook (MP 300-310)

I-10

  • both directions between US 191 and New Mexico line (MP 350-391)

SR 260

  • both directions between Rim Road and Heber (MP 282-302)
  • both directions between Knottingham Lane and fire station (MP 347.1-349.3)
  • both directions between Penrod Lane and Buck Springs Road (MP 354.1-354.4)

US 60

  • both directions between Wickenburg and SR 74 (MP 110-120)
  • both directions between Seneca and Salt River Bridge (MP 288-293)
  • both directions between Vernon and Cerro Montoso (MP 363.5-367.2)

SR 77

  • both directions between Dripping Springs and El Capitan (MP 154-163)

These projects are in addition to pavement repairs that continue in many areas. To address the recent issues, ADOT crews first applied temporary patches and now, with warmer weather, are beginning the more permanent repairs. These repairs often involve patching material or milled and recycled pavement and a heavy-compaction roller to fill in potholes or areas of pavement.

ADOT reminds motorists to slow down in work zones and give workers plenty of space.

The repairs planned for I-17 complement a $35 million paving project that’s resuming this week after winter hiatus. Alongside shorter-term pavement repairs, this project will help address rough conditions on 29 miles of southbound Interstate 17 near Flagstaff.

PAYSON – The Arizona Department of Transportation is starting a pavement replacement project on State Route 87 south of Payson in order to create a smoother driving surface and extend the life of the roadway.

The project will start on Tuesday, Sept. 6, north of the community of Rye and stretch nine miles up to Indian Road, which is mileposts 241 to 250. Drivers heading to and from the Valley and Payson and the White Mountains area should expect lane restrictions and travel delays during the project.

The highway will be narrowed to one lane in each direction while crews are working. All lanes will be open when crews are not working and the new pavement has cured.

The $3.9 million project is expected to be completed by spring 2023.

Drivers heading north on SR 87 should also be aware of an erosion repair project at milepost 230, about 30 miles south of Payson. The project, which started this week, requires a single lane closure on northbound SR 87 as crews work to replace a box culvert and pavement on the shoulder of the highway.

The $650,000 project should be completed in the next several weeks.

FLAGSTAFF – As the Arizona Department of Transportation makes a final push to complete a pavement project on I-40 between I-17 and Walnut Canyon Road in Flagstaff, drivers should expect alternating lane restrictions and delays while traveling through the area.

Beginning Thursday, July 21, there will be alternating lane restrictions on I-40 throughout the 10-mile project area during daytime hours from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Drivers should expect delays of 30 minutes or more.

The lane restriction configurations will change over the next few weeks as crews complete paving along I-40. The lane restrictions are expected to last through mid- August.

The paving project, which began in the spring of 2021, will create a smoother ride for drivers and fix years of winter weather damage to the road surface. In addition to replacing the pavement, work also includes making repairs to bridge decks along the 10-mile stretch and repairing guardrail as needed.

Summertime is the right time to pave the highway. But restrictions don’t always make it a swell time to go a glidin’ down the road.

And one of Arizona's highways that recently started to get new pavement is Interstate 17 south of Flagstaff. This much-needed project will repair years of damage from winter weather.

Crews are beginning to repave the highway in a few places around the Munds Park area and south. Eventually, 29 miles of southbound I-17 from the I-40 interchange down to milepost 312, which is the Coconino County line, will have new pavement.

So, we understand that after your weekend getaway to Flagstaff, when you are heading home to either the Valley or points beyond, you’re not going to want to deal with lane restrictions along the way. But, also remember the rough ride you likely endured in places along I-17 through the Munds Park area down toward the SR 179 junction when heading south from Flagstaff.

Damage from years of winter weather will be erased with this project. A few years ago, we completed a similar project on northbound lanes of I-17.

So, pack plenty of patience on your drive south from the high country and allow for some extra travel time, as well. It will pay off as you notice that smoother ride.

FLAGSTAFF – The Arizona Department of Transportation has completed pavement improvements along Milton Road, also known as SR 89A, in Flagstaff, creating a smoother ride for drivers.

Most of the work took place at night as crews milled down the worn pavement and laid new pavement down. Crews also made sidewalk repairs and improved curb ramps along Milton from Forest Meadows Street to Phoenix Avenue.

Crews still have some sidewalk improvements left to do over the next couple of weeks. Crews will also return later this summer to complete final striping on the road.

The completion of this project adds to other work completed in the Flagstaff area, including the new Rio de Flag bridge and Fourth Street bridge.

FLAGSTAFF – The Arizona Department of Transportation is starting a project to replace pavement on 29 miles of Interstate 17 south of Flagstaff in order to create a smooth driving surface and repair damage from winter weather.

The work will stretch from the I-40 interchange south to the Coconino County line at milepost 312. Crews will mill down the worn, rough pavement and replace it with new pavement.

Drivers should expect southbound I-17 to be restricted to one lane around-the-clock in a couple of locations between Kachina Boulevard and south of Munds Park as work begins. Drivers should be prepared to slow down and proceed through the work zones with caution.

Crews will move to different locations as work is completed along the corridor.

In addition to the travel lanes and shoulders, several on- and off-ramps and nine bridges within the project area will be repaved. The $34.9 million project is expected to last until summer of 2024 with stoppage in work during the winter.

ADOT completed pavement replacement work on the same stretch of I-17 in the northbound direction in the fall of 2019.
