PHOENIX – Last year, the Arizona Department of Transportation along with its maintenance contractors picked up 118,578 bags of trash along freeways in Maricopa County, which translates to approximately 811 tons. This continues an upward trend in the amount of litter accumulation along Valley freeways since 2017.

During the past five years, litter has steadily increased along state freeways in Maricopa County. In 2017, ADOT picked up 80,442 bags of litter compared to the nearly 119,000 bags last year. That’s a 47% increase.

KINGMAN – The Arizona Department of Transportation invites the public to join a virtual public meeting to learn more about the design of a new traffic interchange that will provide a free-flowing connection between Interstate 40 and US 93 in west Kingman.

The meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 25, which the public can join at https://bit.ly/wkingman. ADOT project members will present a video simulation of the new interchange design at the meeting and will then answer questions from the public.

PHOENIX – Southbound State Route 143 will be closed between Loop 202 (Red Mountain Freeway) and Interstate 10 from 10 p.m. Friday. January 20, to 4 a.m. Monday, January 23. Crews with the I-10 Broadway Curve Improvement Project are completing paving and ramp reconfiguration to align with the new southbound 48th Street bridge over I-10. At the same time, the following ramps will be closed:

FLORENCE - A new bridge will be moved into its permanent home starting this Friday evening in Florence, where crews will work around the clock the following two weekends to slide sections of a new structure in place above the Gila River.

This innovative bridge slide process will require lane restrictions on State Route 79 that are expected to cause delays both weekends. Motorists should plan ahead for the work and consider alternate routes.

PHOENIX – A project to improve the driving surface along both directions of US 60 (Superstition Freeway) between Loop 101 and Loop 202 in the East Valley will start with an eastbound freeway closure this weekend (Jan. 6-9), according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.

Eastbound US 60 is scheduled to be closed between Loop 101 and Dobson Road from 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday (Jan. 9). All north- and southbound Loop 101 ramps to east- and westbound US 60 will be closed.

PHOENIX – As the holiday travel season continues, drivers should be prepared for slick conditions on the state’s highways, as winter storms bring rain and snow to Arizona over the next several days. 

The Arizona Department of Transportation advises drivers to avoid traveling during any severe winter storm conditions. Motorists should stay up to date on forecasts from the National Weather Service and plan their travel accordingly.

PHOENIX – With winter storms occurring in northern Arizona this month and more anticipated in the coming months, the Arizona Department of Transportation is reminding drivers to be prepared if traveling on state highways that could be affected by snow and ice.

ADOT crews continue to maintain and operate the agency’s statewide fleet of 200 snowplows in areas where they are needed, especially on busier high country roadways like I-17 and I-40.

PHOENIX – The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has again extended the deadline for domestic airline travelers to have a federally-compliant form of ID. The new date is May 7, 2025. The  Arizona Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Division follows TSA guidelines, and  still encourages people to consider getting the Arizona Travel ID to avoid delays or other travel issues at TSA checkpoints once this takes effect.   

State Route 67 leading to the North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park has closed for the winter effective today, Thursday, Dec. 1.

The highway will be blocked to traffic about a half mile from its junction with US 89A at Jacob Lake. With park facilities closed for the winter, the Arizona Department of Transportation doesn’t clear snow from the highway, which leads 43 miles south from US 89A.

The North Rim averages more than 9 feet of snow annually, according to the National Weather Service.

The newest “On the Road with ADOT” podcast features tips from the Arizona Office of Tourism about exploring the state’s scenic highways with a special emphasis on Historic Route 66.

PHOENIX – Drivers who travel I-17 at night will need to plan ahead to avoid major delays as the highway is closed regularly during the weeknight overnight hours for controlled rock blasting over the next several months. The blasting is necessary work as part of the I-17 Improvement Project from Anthem Way to Sunset Point.

PHOENIX – The Arizona Department of Transportation advises motorists to plan ahead and be prepared to merge safely while a section of southbound State Route 143 is narrowed to one lane between University Drive and Interstate 10. The restriction will be in place continuously from 8 p.m. Monday, Nov. 28, to 11:59 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 1. 

Crews with the Interstate 10 Broadway Curve Improvement Project are continuing to build new bridges that will improve traffic flow between I-10 and SR 143.

PHOENIX – Fewer than six months before the federal deadline for domestic airline travelers to have a federally-compliant form of ID, the Arizona Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Division is urging people to consider getting the Arizona Travel ID. 

PHOENIX — The Arizona Department of Transportation is seeking public input for its Disadvantaged Business Enterprise program as it updates its overall goals for this effort.

ADOT and agencies receiving funds through ADOT award contracts each month for transportation projects throughout the state. As a requirement of receiving U.S. Department of Transportation funds, ADOT must operate the Federal Disadvantaged Business Enterprise Program. 

The Arizona Department of Transportation will host a public open house Wednesday, Nov. 16 in Phoenix to share the details of its plan to develop a network of electric vehicle fast charging stations along interstate highways in Arizona. 

The meeting is one of several public meetings throughout the state to share details of the initial plan implementation and seek public input on which additional highways throughout the state should be added to the ADOT electric vehicle charging station network.

From fender benders to major collisions, crash responders are there to assist those involved and help clear the road as quickly as possible for other commuters.

In recognition of these roadside heroes, Governor Doug Ducey has proclaimed this week (Nov. 14-18) as Crash Responder Safety Week in Arizona. The Arizona Department of Transportation and the Department of Public Safety join in recognizing the job crash responders perform and how to help them stay safe.

PHOENIX – It’s that time of year where the Arizona Department of Transportation is closing five state highways for the winter.

In the White Mountains area, State Route 473 from SR 260 on the White Mountain Apache Reservation to Hawley Lake is scheduled to close on Friday, Nov. 18. State Route 261 from State Route 260 near Eagar to Big Lake and State Route 273 from SR 260 to Sunrise Park and Big Lake are scheduled to close Friday, Dec. 30.

These dates are subject to change if the White Mountains area is impacted by snowfall.
