US 70, Safford to New Mexico State Line Interstate Detour Needs Study
US 70, Safford to New Mexico State Line Interstate Detour Needs Study
Completed 2019 - ADOT conducted this study to examine the US70 corridor between Safford and the New Mexico state line for potential engineering or operational improvements to mitigate the hazards posed to drivers during interstate detour events. US70 between Safford and New Mexico is a portion of the designated detour route for traffic not able to use I-10 in southeastern Arizona and southwestern New Mexico. Detours can be necessary due to natural causes (dust storms, winter storms, fires, or floods) or operational situations (collisions, law enforcement activity, or unplanned maintenance activities). These detours are regional, bi-state, multi-agency operations and can be initiated by Arizona officials (ADOT and DPS) or by their New Mexico counterparts.
