UPDATE: Plan for continued overnight lane restrictions on north- and southbound I-19 between Ajo Way and Valencia Road in Tucson through Sept. 2

The Arizona Department of Transportation advises drivers to plan for continued overnight lane restrictions along north- and southbound Interstate 19 between Ajo Way and Valencia Road from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Monday, Aug. 31, through Wednesday, Sept. 2, as work on the I-19, Irvington Road interchange improvement project continues in Tucson.

Motorists can expect the following overnight lane restrictions:

  • North- and southbound I-19 will be narrowed to one lane between Ajo Way and Valencia Road 
  • A 16-foot vehicle width restriction on I-19 will be in place.
  • The speed limit will be reduced to 45 mph in the work zone.

REMINDER: East- and westbound nighttime lane restrictions on Irvington Road at the I-19 interchange will continue through spring 2028. The speed limit will be reduced to 25 mph. 

Drivers should allow extra time, use caution, be prepared to slow down and merge safely when approaching and traveling through all work zones.

Overview

The Arizona Department of Transportation started construction on the Interstate 19 and Irvington Road interchange in July 2026. The project will reconstruct the interchange to increase capacity and enhance safety by widening Irvington Road to three lanes in each direction and adding lanes to the I-19 on-ramps.

Planned improvements include: 

  • Reconstructing the existing diamond interchange and adding a partial cloverleaf ramp at Irvington Road, that will allow for traffic to flow freely from eastbound Irvington Road to northbound I-19.
  • Widening on-ramps in both directions, including a new merge lane for northbound I-19
  • Installing traffic signals, lighting, signage and pavement markings.
  • Constructing pedestrian and bicycle facilities on both sides of Irvington Road through the project area, including a 12-foot-wide path on the south side of the new Irvington Road bridge.
  • Widening Irvington Road from Calle Santa Cruz west of I-19 to 16th Avenue east of I-19
  • Adding a new dual left-turn bay to double the capacity for traffic turning into the Tucson Spectrum shopping center from westbound Irvington Road to southbound Landing Center Drive.

What to expect 

  • ADOT will maintain two lanes of travel in each direction of I-19 during peak travel times
  • ADOT will maintain two lanes of travel in each direction of Irvington Road during peak travel times
  • ADOT will maintain access to local businesses, with no long-term closures to cross streets or driveways.
  • Traffic control devices will guide motorists through the construction area.
  • ADOT will provide advance notice of restrictions and closures to email subscribers.
  • Later in the project, reconstruction work will require short-term closures of the northbound on- and off-ramps and southbound on-ramp. ADOT will announce details as the work is approaching. The southbound off-ramp will remain open throughout the project, with reconstruction occurring in phases.

Project Schedule

Construction began in July 2026 and is projected to take 20 months to complete, finishing up in the spring of 2028. Schedules are always subject to change because of weather and other unforeseen circumstances.
