Wayfinding Signs - FAQs

Who designs, installs, and maintains the sign?

Requesting agencies will design, procure and install signs to ADOT specifications as outlined in the Traffic Guidelines, Processes and Procedures (TGP) 338, and the 11th Edition Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), Community Wayfinding Signs Section 2D.55. The requesting agency will also maintain the sign for its service life.

What is the cost of the permit?

Answer: There is no fee - ADOT does not have legislative authority to charge for encroachment permits.

Where does the jurisdiction find the Wayfinding Guide Sign System Plan that they have to submit?

The jurisdiction will develop the plan themself as outlined in subsection 338.4 of the TGP.

Do you have an example of what a sign procured through this process looks like?

Refer to Figure 338-1 in Section 338 of the TGP for an example of wayfinding signs with an identification marker. Sign measurements can be found here.
