Written Test

If you are currently licensed in another state, a written test will normally not be required. However, in some cases it may be required.

If you have never had a driver license in the United States, regardless of your age, you must pass the written or verbal knowledge test before scheduling a road test. For information about Foreign Reciprocity, click here.

Most teenagers under 18 can take the Permit Test @ Home with parent or guardian supervision. More information.

The written test for a regular driver license consists of 30 multiple-choice questions. You take the test at a computer work station using a touch screen (audio assist is available). Questions are taken from the Arizona Driver License Manual. Please thoroughly study the manual before taking the test.

A score of 80 percent or higher is required to pass the examination.

Testing Hours: Tests are available from 7:30 a.m.-4:45 p.m., Monday-Friday, except state holidays and the second Wednesday of each month. No appointment is necessary.

Note: This doesn't apply to CDL testing.

Verbal Knowledge Test

A verbal knowledge test may be considered in lieu of the written test in these situations:

• A customer declares that he or she cannot read or has a low reading competency.
• A customer has incorrectly answered a large number of questions on a previous test or has failed a second or third attempt.
• A customer reads in a foreign language and a written test in the foreign language is not available.

Offices conduct verbal tests by appointment. Visit the office to schedule an appointment.

A computerized audio version of the written knowledge test is available in offices without an appointment.
