Overview

Project Cost: $12 million

The Grand Canyon National Airport has officially reopened on schedule (August 11) following the successful completion of Phase 1 of its $12 million runway rehabilitation project. This project, launched in mid-July, enhances safety, extends the runway's lifespan and brings the airfield into compliance with FAA standards.

Phase 1 Highlights:

  • Reconfiguration and rehabilitation of taxiway intersections P, A, and B to address a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) identified hotspot.
  • Updated the taxiway nomenclature (signage) for the entire airfield to meet current FAA standards.
  • Modified aircraft parking apron, including painting of the green no-taxi island.

Phase 2  is scheduled to begin September 10 and includes runway grooving and applying a second coat of pavement markings.

What's Ahead

Phase 2 - this phase will require nightly runway closures, which are scheduled to occur from September 10 through September 29. Pilots and tenants are encouraged to plan accordingly, and the airport will issue regular updates as the date approaches.
 
Runway Closures
Phase I of the runway rehabilitation project began July 14 and was completed on Aug. 10. While Phase 1 addressed the core portion of the project, including resurfacing and airfield improvements. 
 
Phase 2 will complete the finishing work. Nightly runway closures are scheduled from Wednesday, Sept. 10 through Monday, Sept. 29.

Project Cost:

With the support of the FAA’s awarded federal grant, now is the opportune time to undertake this project. The estimated construction cost is approximately $12 million. 

The project will be funded by a Federal Aviation Administration Airport Improvement Program (AIP) grant, along with state matching funds.
