Plan for overnight lane restriction on Irvington Road as an I-19 interchange improvements project begins in Tucson July 16

Drivers should expect delays and allow extra travel time

The Arizona Department of Transportation advises drivers to plan for overnight lane restrictions on Irvington Road between 12th Avenue and Calle Santa Cruz as a new interchange improvements project gets underway at Interstate 19 and Irvington Road in Tucson.

Work is scheduled weekdays from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. beginning Thursday, July 16, through spring 2028.

Motorists can expect the following overnight restrictions :

  • East- and westbound Irvington Road will be narrowed to one lane in each direction.
  • A 12-foot vehicle width restriction
  • The speed limit will be reduced to 25 mph in the work zone

Drivers should allow extra travel time, use caution, be prepared to slow down and merge safely when approaching and traveling through all work zones.

Overview

The Arizona Department of Transportation is working to improve the Interstate 19 and Irvington Road interchange. The project will reconstruct the interchange to increase capacity and enhance safety by widening Irvington Road to three lanes in each direction and adding lanes to the I-19 on-ramps. The project is scheduled to begin construction in the summer of 2026.

Planned improvements include:

  • Reconstructing the existing diamond interchange and adding a partial cloverleaf ramp at Irvington Road.
  • Widening on-ramps which will accommodate future ramp metering.
  • Installing traffic signals, lighting, signage and pavement markings.
  • Constructing pedestrian and bicycle facilities on both sides of Irvington Road.
