Construction at I-19 and Mariposa Road to bring mid-June travel restriction

ADOT to close I-19 on-ramp at Mariposa Road for drilling work

The northbound entrance ramp to Interstate 19 from Mariposa Road in Nogales will be closed over the weekend of June 13-14 as work begins to improve Mariposa Road (State Route 189) between the U.S.-Mexico border and Grand Avenue.

The Arizona Department of Transportation has scheduled the closure of the on-ramp at Exit 4 of I-19 starting at 8 p.m. Friday, June 12 and plans to reopen it to traffic at 6 a.m. Monday, June 15.

The closure will allow a contractor for ADOT to drill shafts for piers to support one of two new flyover ramps connecting I-19 and SR189 as part of the $134 million project.

Motorists can access northbound I-19 at Grand Avenue or Western Avenue during this restriction. The ramp to exit I-19 at Mariposa Road will remain open to traffic.

Other improvements to be made include widening approximately 3.75 miles of Mariposa Road and constructing a traffic circle at the intersection of Mariposa Road and Target Range Road.

Construction on the project is expected to be complete in fall of 2021.

Drivers should proceed in the work zone with caution, slow down and watch for construction equipment and personnel.
