ADOT website has materials and practice tests to help aspiring drivers

PHOENIX – The school year is over, and summer has begun. Many students will still be studying for a very important test; their written driver instruction permit test.

The summer break is typically a busy time for permit tests for the Arizona Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Division. Thankfully, the ADOT website is a great resource for test-takers and their parents, sharing the Arizona Driver License Manual and even free practice tests at azdot.gov/permit-tests

Aspiring drivers must be 15 years and six months old to apply for an Instruction Permit. First-time drivers younger than 18 have a few options for taking the written test. Most choose to take the test online via Permit Test @ Home available at AZMVDNow.gov

The permit test is also offered at MVD office locations. Applicants can schedule their in-person test appointment date and time at AZMVDNow.gov > Schedule an Appointment. Participating Arizona Professional Driving School trainers also administer the written test.

Does this sound familiar?

Teenager:  “Mom, I need to get my learner’s permit, can you take tomorrow afternoon off to take me to MVD for the test?”

Mom (to herself): “Aside from the fact that my boss will be upset and I’m two days behind on my work… sure, that sounds great.”

Mom (aloud): “Of course. Anything to help, sweetie.”

Ah, the things our parents do for us.

The rite of passage that is taking the learner’s permit test is one of those mandatory exercises parents look forward to… er, anticipate… er, dread with every fiber of their being.

Too bad it hasn’t be simplified.

But wait, it has!

Since early 2018, the Permit Test @ Home has been available for potential teen drivers to take the learner’s permit test – for real – online.

And in November, the Permit Test @ Home reached a milestone. For the first time ever, more teens are taking the online test than they are at an MVD office.

You might be tempted to say, “So what? I don’t have teenagers at home. This means nothing to me.”

But you would be mistaken.

You see, every time the Permit Test @ Home is taken, that’s one less MVD office visit for the teen and at least one parent or guardian. If they don’t have to come to an MVD office, that’s less customer traffic  and more opportunities for MVD’s employees to serve other customers.  Like you, perhaps.

The Permit Test @ Home is an innovative way to shift more MVD services securely online. A parent or guardian signs up for a free AZ MVD Now account through ServiceArizona.com and the rest is simple and free. It can be taken any time, and it encourages both parents and teens to review the rules of the road more completely. That’s a big win for safety.

The choice is obvious: taking half the day and going to an office to take a test or taking it at home with your family, your dog and your refrigerator nearby? Hmmmm…

The Permit Test @ Home. Do it for Mom.

More potential teen drivers are choosing to take the learner’s permit test online than ever before. For the first time since the Permit Test @ Home was introduced in March, 2018, more tests are being taken online than at MVD offices.

Data for the month of November show that slightly more than 50 percent of all permit tests were taken using the Permit Test @ Home as opposed to just over 49 percent of tests taken at an MVD office. By comparison, in November, 2018, office tests outpaced online testing by approximately 57 percent to 43 percent.

“It was just a matter of time for the Permit Test @ Home to become the method of choice for the majority of teens to take the learner’s permit test,” said MVD Stakeholder Relations Manager Jennifer Bowser Richards

She added, “Teens and parents are catching on to the convenience of taking the test at home and because parents proctor the test, it’s a great chance for adults and teens to review the rules of the road together. It also frees up MVD offices for other customers to be served more rapidly because so many teens and at least one parent or guardian can avoid one MVD office visit.”

In November, 2019, the Permit Test @ Home was taken a total of 6,758 times. Combining that number with at least one parent or guardian, potentially 13,516 customers avoided at least one MVD office visit, creating more opportunities for MVD to serve other customers. Statewide, MVD serves a total of approximately 7,500 office customers each day.

In order to take the test, parents need to establish a free account at AZ MVD Now, a service accessed through www.ServiceArizona.com. The accounts are secured through a multi-factor password process, and parents agree to proctor the test.

Once the teen passes the test, a receipt is generated and the teen and parents may go to an MVD office to confirm the results and get the actual permit.

The vision of the Arizona Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Division is to “get Arizona out of line and safely on the road”. Dedicated MVD employees, Authorized Third Party providers and offering more services online help MVD achieve this vision.
