ADOT project has about 9 miles of new pavement; minor work continues

TUCSON – The Arizona Department of Transportation has completed paving work on a project that’s improved 9 miles of State Route 77/Oracle Road in the Tucson area.

New pavement has replaced worn asphalt throughout the project area between Calle Concordia in Oro Valley and Miracle Mile in Tucson, and on Miracle Mile between Oracle Road and Interstate 10.

The paving is part of a two-and-a-half-year, $34 million project that also included improvements to lighting, sidewalks, drainage, turn lanes and traffic signals on a roadway that carries more than 50,000 vehicles a day.

While motorists should expect to see limited construction activity continue through summer, most remaining work is off the roadway and only expected to involve limited lane restrictions. As it has throughout the project, ADOT will continue maintaining access to all 1,100 businesses in the area.

In addition to pavement, the project included:

  • Reconstructing and repaving the roadway from River Road to Calle Concordia
  • Adding new dual left turn lanes to the intersection of Magee and Oracle roads
  • Making lighting improvements, including new LED street lights, between River and Ina roads
  • Constructing ADA-compliant ramps, sidewalks, driveways between River and Magee roads to improve pedestrian safety
  • Installing a storm drain system between River to Orange Grove roads
  • Reconstructing driveways, sidewalks and sidewalk ramps between I-10/Miracle Mile and River Road
  • Improving signals and intersections between River and Ina roads
  • Making roadway drainage improvements
  • Relocating utilities

Crews replacing worn pavement between Ina Road and Rillito River Bridge

TUCSON – The Arizona Department of Transportation is set to begin the final phase of a project repaving 10 miles of State Route 77 between Tucson and Oro Valley. On Sunday night, May 14, crews will begin replacing about 3 miles of worn pavement between Ina Road and the Rillito River Bridge just south of River Road.

As has been the case with most major work on the $34 million project, the paving will occur overnight to minimize restrictions and delays.

As the project continues through July, motorists can expect work to take place between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. Sunday through Thursday nights, with the exception of the Memorial Day and the Fourth of July holiday weekends.

Crews will begin with southbound SR 77 at Ina Road and move south and one lane at a time. Once they reach the Rillito River Bridge, work will begin on the northbound lanes. Motorists should expect an uneven driving surface and lowered speed limits.

One lane will remain open in each direction at all times. However, eastbound and westbound traffic will be detoured as crews work at the intersections of Ina, Orange Grove, Rudasill and River roads.

The project also has improved safety and traffic flow SR 77 between Interstate 10 and Miracle Mile, as well as on Oracle Road between Miracle Mile and Calle Concordia: The improvements include:

  • Reconstructing and repave the roadway from River Road to Calle Concordia
  • Adding dual left turn lanes to the intersection of Magee and Oracle roads
  • Adding LED street lights between River and Ina roads
  • Constructing ADA-approved ramps, sidewalks and driveways between River and Magee roads to improve pedestrian safety
  • Installing a storm drain system from River to Orange Grove roads
  • Reconstructing driveways, sidewalks and sidewalk ramps between I-10/Miracle Mile and River Road
  • Improving signals and intersections between River and Ina roads
  • Improving roadway drainage
  • Relocating utilities

Throughout the project, ADOT has maintained access to the roughly 1,100 businesses in the corridor.

TUCSON - The Arizona Department of Transportation will begin a fourth round of pavement replacement work on the State Route 77/Oracle Road improvement project starting the week of Sunday, Oct, 16, with plans to resurface one mile of the highway in the coming weeks.

The paving will take place between Ina and Magee roads. As with most work on the project, crews will pave the roadway in the overnight hours to minimize restrictions and delays. Work is scheduled Sundays through Thursdays between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. The upcoming paving work is expected to take about three weeks.

The paving will take place one lane at a time, with crews starting on turn lanes before working on travel lanes.

During the overnight work, motorists can expect large vehicles and equipment on the roadway to remove the existing pavement and then install new asphalt. Motorists should also expect uneven pavement and reduced speed limits. One lane of travel will remain open during pavement operations and ADOT will maintain access to business at all times.

The new pavement is one of many improvements planned as part of a two-year, $34 million project to improve 10 miles of the highway between Interstate 10 and Oracle Road, as well as on Oracle Road from Miracle Mile to Calle Concordia.

Crews have already completed a little more than half the total pavement work on the project. Pavement has been completed on the Miracle Mile stretch of SR 77 between I-10 and Oracle Road, along with Oracle Road from Miracle Mile to the Rillito River bridge just south of River Road. Also, work crews have paved 1.5 miles at the northern limit of the project between Calle Concordia and Magee Road.

More recently, crews have been working on the area between Magee and River Roads. Unlike the areas that have already been paved, this segment of roadway includes multiple improvements in addition to new pavement. Those improvements include:

  • Signal and intersection improvements between River and Ina roads
  • Constructing new ADA-compliant ramps, sidewalks and driveways between River and Magee roads
  • Adding a new dual left-turn lane from northbound Oracle to westbound Magee Road
  • Installing a storm drain between River and Orange Grove roads

While most paving work is being done overnight to minimize traffic delays, drivers should expect some daytime lane restrictions and delays through the project. During all times, ADOT will maintain access to the roughly 1,100 businesses in the corridor.

TUCSON – Paving work will begin Monday, April 18, as part of a six-month project to improve a 5.5-mile section of State Route 77/Oracle Road in Oro Valley, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.

The work will span the highway between Calle Concordia and Tangerine roads, where crews will remove and replace worn pavement. The $11.8 million project includes other improvements such as repairing the Canyon De Oro bridge deck, adding bus bays, installing new fencing and traffic signs, along with adding new curb, gutter and sidewalks in select locations.

ADOT will minimize construction impacts by performing most of the work at night, with crews scheduled Sunday through Thursday nights between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m except for Easter, Memorial Day and the Fourth of July holidays. During overnight work, crews will maintain one lane of travel in each direction. ADOT will maintain access to businesses in the work zone at all times.

Drivers should continue to see some daytime work and lane restrictions. Throughout the project, motorists should watch for uneven pavement and reduced speed limits.

When work begins April 18, crews will begin paving work on turn lanes on SR 77, starting at Calle Concordia Road and working north toward Tangerine Road. As paving continues through July, crews will pave one lane at time, working in rotating directions.

This paving project is ADOT’s second major recent pavement improvement project on SR 77 in the Tucson area. Last March, a 2-year project began to repave 10 miles of SR 77 from Interstate 10 to Oracle Road, and Oracle Road from Miracle Mile to Calle Concordia.

TUCSON - A two-year project began in April to pave and make other improvements to 10 miles of State Route 77, yet just 9 months into the project more than half the pavement has been replaced to make for a smoother ride.

As 2021 comes to a close, motorists are seeing a big change to this busy Tucson-area roadway where large segments of worn pavement have been replaced..

Crews with the Arizona Department of Transportation have just completed a little more than half the total pavement work on the 10-mile-long, $34 million project to improve SR 77 on Miracle Mile between Interstate 10 and Oracle Road, along with Oracle Road from Miracle Mile to Calle Concordia.

The latest paving covered the Miracle Mile stretch of SR 77 between I-10 and Oracle Road, along with Oracle Road from Miracle Mile to the Rillito River bridge just south of River Road. That’s about a 4-mile segment. Work included reconstructing driveways, sidewalks and sidewalk ramps to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

And earlier this year, work crews paved 1.5 miles at the northern limit of the project between Calle Concordia and Magee Road.

With about 5.5 miles of new pavement complete as of this weekend, drivers will now get a break from traffic restrictions during the holiday season.

In 2022, work will resume on the area between Magee and River Roads. Unlike the areas paved in 2021, this segment of roadway includes multiple improvements in addition to new pavement. Those improvements include:

  • Signal and intersection improvements between River and Ina roads
  • Constructing new ADA-compliant ramps, sidewalks and driveways between River and Magee roads
  • Adding new dual left-turn lanes at the intersection of Magee and Oracle roads
  • Installing a storm drain between River and Orange Grove roads
  • New pavement as other project elements are completed

While most paving work is being done overnight to minimize traffic delays, drivers should expect some daytime lane restrictions and delays through the project. During all times, ADOT will maintain access to the roughly 1,100 businesses in the corridor.

TUCSON – The Arizona Department of Transportation will begin a second round of pavement replacement work on the State Route 77/Oracle Road improvement project starting the week of Sunday, Oct. 3, with plans to pave four miles of the highway by late 2021.

The work will take place on the southern end of the project, with paving operations on Miracle Mile between Interstate 10 and Oracle Road, along with Oracle Road from Miracle Mile to River Road.

Most of the work will occur overnight to minimize construction impacts, with paving and lane restrictions scheduled Sundays through Thursdays between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m.

The first paving will begin along southbound Oracle Road at Miracle Mile, with work then taking place on Miracle Mile between I-10 and Oracle Road. Crews will pave turning lanes before working on travel lanes.

During the overnight work, motorists can expect large vehicles and equipment on the roadway to remove the existing pavement and then install new asphalt. Crews will work on one lane at a time.

During the overnight work, motorists can expect large vehicles and equipment on the roadway to remove the existing pavement and then install new asphalt. Motorists should also expect uneven pavement and reduced speed limits through December. One lane of travel will remain open during pavement operations.

The new pavement is one of many improvements planned as part of a two-year, $34 million project to improve the highway between Interstate 10 and Oracle Road, as well as on Oracle Road from Miracle Mile to Calle Concordia.

While the entire length of the project will involve replacing worn pavement, the section between Ina and Magee roads will see significant improvements. The upgrades include curb and gutter, sidewalks and LED lighting between River and Ina Roads, with curb and gutter between Ina and Magee roads.

This summer, ADOT completed the first pavement replacement work on 1.5 miles of Oracle Road between Calle Concordia and Magee Road at the northern end of the project. Additional pavement work will resume in 2022.

Drivers should expect some daytime lane restrictions and delays through the project. During all times, ADOT will maintain access to the roughly 1,100 businesses in the corridor.
