Learn the Name-A-Snowplow contest finalists

Mt. Humpfreeze. Flake Forty-Eight. Shovelin’ Sunshine.

These names or others could soon adorn some of the Arizona Department of Transportation’s snowplows.They are three of the nearly 4,700 names that Arizonans submitted in ADOT’s Name–A-Snowplow contest this month and are among the 15 finalists.

YUMA - The Arizona Department of Transportation will host a public open house Tuesday, Oct. 25, in Yuma to share the details of its plan to develop a network of electric vehicle fast charging stations along interstate highways in Arizona.

The meeting is one of several public meetings throughout the state to share details of the initial plan implementation and seek public input on which additional highways throughout the state should be added to the ADOT electric vehicle charging station network.

PHOENIX- The Arizona Department of Transportation advises motorists to expect delays and plan to use detour routes this weekend as Interstate 10 is closed in both directions between State Route 143 and US 60 at different times from Friday, Oct. 21, to Monday, Oct. 24. Crews with the Interstate 10 Broadway Curve Improvement Project are continuing bridge work at 48th Street, and SRP is relocating utilities in the work zone.

PHOENIX – The Arizona Department of Transportation joins traffic safety stakeholders across the country in recognizing National Teen Driver Safety Week (Oct. 16-22) and encouraging teens to make safe choices when driving. Nationally, car crashes are among the leading causes of death for teens. In 2021 in Arizona, 33 teen drivers died in vehicle collisions and 3,293 others suffered injuries, according to statewide crash reports.

PHOENIX – It’s time to remember to “Move Over,” Arizona, and look out for incident responders assisting motorists in need.

The Arizona Department of Transportation is partnering with incident responders statewide to increase awareness about Arizona’s “Move Over” law in recognition of National Move Over Day on Saturday, Oct. 15. The Arizona Professional Towing and Recovery Association has organized a number of events for Move Over Day, including a parade of tow trucks and other incident response vehicles.

TUCSON - The Arizona Department of Transportation will begin a fourth round of pavement replacement work on the State Route 77/Oracle Road improvement project starting the week of Sunday, Oct, 16, with plans to resurface one mile of the highway in the coming weeks.

The paving will take place between Ina and Magee roads. As with most work on the project, crews will pave the roadway in the overnight hours to minimize restrictions and delays. Work is scheduled Sundays through Thursdays between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. The upcoming paving work is expected to take about three weeks.

HOLBROOK – The Arizona Department of Transportation wants to remind drivers that in 10 days, State Route 77, known locally as Navajo Boulevard, will be closed in both directions at the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad crossing in Holbrook at 1 p.m. from Saturday, Oct. 22, to Tuesday, Oct. 25, so the railroad company can replace the crossing. Drivers are urged to plan ahead for the closure.

Westbound I-10 will be closed between US 60 and State Route 143 from 10 p.m. Friday, Oct. 14, to 4 a.m. Monday, Oct 17. The following ramps will also be closed:

PHOENIX – The Arizona Department of Transportation has been awarded a nearly $13.3 million grant that will provide funding for a wider, safer US 95 between Yuma and the Yuma Proving Ground.

The U.S. Department of Defense awarded the grant funds to ADOT this month as part of its Defense Community Infrastructure Pilot Program. The grant is intended to help personnel and equipment travel to military installations more safely and reliably.

PHOENIX – Earlier this month, 39 Arizona Department of Transportation Adopt a Highway Volunteer groups consisting of more than 200 individuals hit the highways across the state to pick up trash for National Clean Up Day. The groups collectively picked up more than two tons of litter and debris.

“We are so thankful to our volunteers who came out for National Clean Up Day this year,” said Mary Currie, ADOT’s Adopt a Highway coordinator. “Our volunteers help us keep the highways clean year round.”

Changes coming to the MVD road test this week

PHOENIX – The Arizona Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Division (MVD) has updated the road test for new drivers as drivers will be asked to provide proof of insurance and registration prior to the exam.

“These changes are intended to provide a consistent experience at any of the MVD offices or authorized third party locations across Arizona,” said Mike Cryderman, MVD field operations administrator. “This new process continues our vision to become the safest, most reliable transportation system in the country.”

PHOENIX – The Arizona Department of Transportation and the Tonto National Forest are starting a project this week to pave and make other improvements to an 11-mile gravel section of the highway between Apache Lake and the Theodore Roosevelt Dam.

The work includes installing an aggregate base and covering it with a chip seal, in addition improving drainage features that are not functional or have been damaged by flooding. The project will also improve sight lines at five locations.
