As the holiday travel season kicks off, the Arizona Department of Transportation will be limiting highway closures for construction and maintenance work between now and the start of 2019.

During National Traffic Incident Management (TIM) Awareness Week (Nov. 11-17), the Arizona Department of Transportation, Arizona Department of Public Safety and other traffic-safety stakeholders are providing the traveling public with TIM tips. In addition, motorists will see TIM-related safety messages on overhead signs and on social media this week.

Due to a colder, wetter October than anticipated, final work on the State Route 260 widening project between Camp Verde and Cottonwood will take place next spring, including putting down the final pavement layer known as a friction course.

With Arizona Department of Transportation projects improving Interstate 17 and Interstate 40 around Flagstaff approaching a winter hiatus, the area now has upgraded bridge decks, two new bridges and 20 total miles of rebuilt roadway. There are also many more miles of fresh pavement, with additional paving to come when warmer temperatures return.

Project should be complete in May.

The Arizona Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Division has received the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators (AAMVA) “Improvement through Efficiencies Service Award” for the MVD online insurance update and reinstatement functions introduced last year.

As construction advances on a Loop 202 South Mountain Freeway interchange in west Phoenix, motorists traveling through the Interstate 10 work zone will begin using lanes with a temporary concrete surface.

Following a six-month closure, Estrella Drive reopened today to traffic west of 51st Avenue in Laveen with construction complete on an interchange for the Loop 202 South Mountain Freeway.

Closure until December 2019

The Arizona Department of Transportation’s original plan for improving the Interstate 17 bridges at Willard Springs Road south of Flagstaff called for replacing the decks in both directions over two summers, ending well into 2019. The project that’s underway, however, is replacing the bridges in their entirety by the end of November – at no additional cost.

To help remove barriers to careers in transportation construction, ADOT offers Construction Academy programs with employers, community colleges, Native American tribes and others.

Motorists in the Laveen area should plan ahead with Dobbins Road closing Monday, Oct. 29, from west of 59th Avenue to 75th Avenue for construction of a Loop 202 South Mountain Freeway interchange.

During the closures, crews will pump approximately 730 cubic yards of concrete, enough to fill more than 60 dump trucks, into the steel-reinforced deck on the flyover ramp, the longest of five ramps that will be part of the interchange.

As the Arizona Department of Transportation advances projects that will add capacity to Interstate 17 north of the Phoenix area, drivers can help improve safety and reduce delays today by avoiding speeding, aggressive driving, distraction from things like cellphones and other behaviors that lead to crashes.
