The SR 347 Improvement Project officially began construction on June 29, 2026 with the first phase–the pavement rehabilitation. The entire improvement project will take approximately three and a half years to complete and is expected to be completed in late 2029.

Travel Time: According to the 2021 SR 347 Corridor Improvement Plan, the planned improvements are projected to reduce travel time across the full length of the corridor by approximately 10 minutes.

Vehicle Crashes: New interchanges at Riggs Road and Mammoth Way will improve safety by allowing drivers to bypass the traffic signals and enter the highway via on-ramps to get up to speed. Intersection improvements at Casa Blanca Road and Maricopa Road include the addition of turn lanes, improving the flow of traffic and reducing the potential for traffic conflict.

The project’s funding includes contributions from the State of Arizona, the Maricopa Association of Governments, the City of Maricopa and Pinal County. There is no federal funding for this project.

The planned improvements include:

• Adding one lane in each direction along SR 347 from I-10 to the City of Maricopa
• Constructing a concrete median barrier to physically separate the directions of travel
• Rehabilitating the existing pavement along the same 14-mile stretch of roadway
• Constructing new grade-separated interchanges at Riggs Road and Mammoth Way
• Adding turn lanes and other intersection improvements at Casa Blanca Road and Maricopa Road

If unforeseen circumstances require a significant schedule change, the public will be notified via the project webpage and newsletter. The schedule of traffic restrictions for the ongoing construction work is updated and distributed weekly. Real-time highway conditions are available on ADOT’s Arizona Traveler Information site at AZ511.gov, the az511 app (download for Apple or Android devices) or by calling 511. Drivers can set their own alerts on the AZ511 app in order to be notified when there is an incident, lane restriction or closure.

Phase 1 of the project is pavement rehabilitation. This work is scheduled to occur June through December 2026. Future phases, including roadway widening, interchange construction and intersection improvements will begin in Winter 2026.

Additional details regarding the schedule will be provided via the project webpage and emailed newsletters by the end of this year.

Intersection improvements at Casa Blanca Road will include dual left turn lanes from Casa Blanca Road onto southbound SR 347, a new acceleration lane for traffic entering northbound SR 347 from Casa Blanca Road, a right turn lane for those exiting southbound SR 347 onto Casa Blanca Road, and improved signal timing technology to optimize traffic flow. Lighting improvements will be also added at Casa Blanca Road to enhance nighttime visibility and safety.

The interchange at Riggs Road will be grade-separated, allowing north-south traffic to continue along SR 347 via an elevated bridge. Riggs Road will remain at grade-level, with east-west traffic traveling underneath SR 347. Riggs Road will have two lanes in each direction, as well as a left-turn and right-turn lane in each direction to access SR 347.

Yes, the improvements made during this project will include an update to the traffic light timing at Casa Blanca Road and other intersections within the project area.

The project team analyzed multiple factors to help guide this decision:

• Safety – A crash analysis conducted between 2017 and 2023 found that crash history is similar at the two intersections and is not a determining factor.
• Future growth and development – The project team consulted with local property owners and the City of Maricopa to help forecast future development and travel patterns. Planned developments will be better supported with an interchange at Mammoth Way/Cement Plant Road.
• Engineering and environmental factors – Casa Blanca Road's proximity to the Santa Cruz Wash makes engineering and environmental requirements significantly more complex and would require the construction of two additional bridges.
• Cost efficiency – Due to environmental factors, constructing the interchange at Casa Blanca Road was estimated to cost $40 million more than the interchange at Mammoth Way/Cement Plant Road.

Taking these factors into account, ADOT will move forward with an interchange at Mammoth Way/Cement Plant Road and intersection improvements at Casa Blanca Road.

Future regional planning may identify the need for an interchange at Casa Blanca Road. The Maricopa Association of Governments (MAG) is the regional planner for SR 347 in this area. If future need is identified and funded, ADOT would design, obtain environmental approval and acquire the right of way to construct an additional interchange at Casa Blanca Road.

Streetlights will be installed at interchanges and some intersections to improve visibility and safety as drivers enter and exit SR 347.

Speed limits have been reduced to 55 mph throughout the entire 14-mile project corridor and 45 mph in active work zones for the safety of drivers and construction personnel. Active work zones are typically no more than a 5-mile section of the project area at any given time.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS) Highway Patrol division enforces speed limits and other traffic violations.

No, the project team works in close coordination with DPS and other emergency responders to ensure access for emergency vehicles along the project corridor.

Construction activities will be conducted in phases. Phase 1, pavement rehabilitation, will occur from June to December 2026. Phase 2 of construction is expected to begin in winter 2026.

Pavement rehabilitation will start at the north end of the project area near I-10 and move south toward the City of Maricopa.

ADOT has committed to maintaining two travel lanes open for traffic in each direction during weekday commute hours.

During off-peak travel times, SR 347 may be narrowed to one lane in each direction for necessary work.

The project team is encouraging drivers to plan ahead, plan for extra travel time, stay informed through all of the project's information resources, be patient and drive safely.

While the occasional lane restriction may be necessary, this project does not include any extended full closures at Riggs Road. The project team will construct the Riggs Road bridge to the east of SR 347 to maintain traffic in all directions and minimize disruptions.

The project team is currently working to secure environmental clearance and right-of-way necessary to schedule and begin construction. Once started, construction will take roughly one year to complete.
