Ten miles resurfaced between Tonopah, Salome Road
The $19 million project milled the highway surface and replaced it with new pavement between mile markers 80-90, a stretch that begins about 20 miles west of SR 85. The project also added drainage, replaced guardrails, and repaired a bridge and box culverts.

Surface upgraded on 20 miles between Holbrook and Heber-Overgaard
The pavement rehabilitation project, which began in August, applied chip seal and micro surface treatments between State Route 77 near Holbrook and milepost 13 northeast of State Route 277 and Heber-Overgaard. It also made spot pavement repairs.

Twelve miles of pavement rehabilitated, bridge deck replaced
This $30 million improvement near Petrified Forest National Park removed the top layer of pavement between mileposts 319 and 331 and replaced it with an asphalt-mix overlay. Crews also replaced the eastbound I-40 Dead River Bridge deck to extend the structure’s life and enhance safety.

Drivers should plan for extra travel time
The Arizona Department of Transportation will begin an improvement project on Business 40 from Crestview Drive and Joy Nevin Avenue in Holbrook starting Monday, Sept. 23. Crews will be replacing the pavement and restriping the roadway as well as installing 24 Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant sidewalk ramps along the project area.

The posted detour using the northbound I-17 frontage road moved traffic efficiently throughout the weekend, and ADOT is grateful to drivers who heeded advice to use this route. Law enforcement officers and ADOT personnel were in the area to assist with local-only closures at neighborhood entrances.

If you’ve driven State Route 77 in Tucson in the past few weeks, you aren’t just seeing the results of a big improvement project, you’re also feeling it.

That’s because ADOT finished work earlier this month to replace 9 miles of worn and rough pavement with smooth new asphalt, nearly wrapping up a $34 million improvement project that’s been underway since early 2021.
