How do we apply for a sign on ADOT right-of-way?

ADOT offers two options for local agencies to apply for a wayfinding sign program on state highways

  • The standard process is to create a comprehensive Wayfinding Guide Sign System Plan. Once the plan is created, the agency needs to apply for an ADOT Encroachment Permit and attach the Wayfinding Sign Plan.
  • For a more streamlined process, local agencies can use the new Wayfinding Sign Application Form. This form is designed to simplify the application for individuals or a small number of signs. The completed form should be submitted to the appropriate ADOT District Permitting Office. The application will be reviewed, and upon approval, the signs can be fabricated and installed. Download the Wayfinding Sign Application Form.

Both options require submitting a Wayfinding Guide Sign System Plan or Application Plan to the appropriate ADOT District via the encroachment permit process for approval, but the municipality is responsible for any costs associated with the sign itself, installation, and maintenance.
