How do we apply for a sign on ADOT right-of-way?

To implement a wayfinding sign program involving state highways, a public agency must submit a Wayfinding Guide Sign System Plan to the appropriate ADOT District via the encroachment permit process for approval.

Step 1: Develop a Plan for regional Wayfinding signs.
Note: Hiring a Consulting Firm specializing in Traffic Engineering may be helpful for this step.
Apply for an ADOT Encroachment Permit and attach the Wayfinding Sign Plan.
ADOT District conducts Administrative Review for completeness.
Make any necessary updates to the Permit Application. Once administratively complete, it passes to ADOT’s Regional Traffic team.
ADOT’s Regional Traffic staff will review the plan.
After final approval, signs can be fabricated and installed.
Maintain sign for its life cycle.

What additional information needs to be included with the Encroachment Permit in order for a Wayfinding Sign request to be processed?

A Wayfinding Guide Sign System Plan includes the following:

  • Any information on the agency’s existing Wayfinding Sign program
  • A detailed map showing the proposed locations of the signs
  • Graphical representations of the sign formats to be used
  • Detailed information on the sign design, including foundations and posts, in accordance with ADOT specifications and standard drawings.
