PHOENIX – A new bridge to carry Pinnacle Peak Road traffic over Interstate 17 will start to take shape over the next month as part of improvements coming to north Phoenix.

A bridge along historic Route 66 is a great early example of vehicular bridges in our state.

Travelers along State Route 89 south of Ash Fork will see the bridge over Meath Wash come down as crews begin the six-month process of a removing the old structure and replacing it with a cast-in-place, two-span bridge.

Motorists using Interstate 15 in far northwestern Arizona will need to budget extra travel time over the next year as the Arizona Department of Transportation improves the decks of three bridges through the Virgin River Gorge between St. George, Utah, and Mesquite, Nevada.

Whether today or 40 years ago, our highway engineers and crews are thinking about how to move traffic from one side to the other of the Salt River in Phoenix.

The largest structures on the Arizona Department of Transportation’s Loop 202 South Mountain Freeway project are nearly complete, with crews finishing the concrete decks of two half-mile-long bridges that will carry traffic over the Salt River in the growing southwest Valley.

This effort is interesting beyond the wow factor, as it's a major step forward for a project widening 4 miles of I-10 to three lanes between Earley Road and I-8 in Casa Grande.

As the Loop 202 South Mountain Freeway advances, bridge girders are being installed this week at two of the 14 planned traffic interchanges.

Closure until December 2019

The Arizona Department of Transportation’s original plan for improving the Interstate 17 bridges at Willard Springs Road south of Flagstaff called for replacing the decks in both directions over two summers, ending well into 2019. The project that’s underway, however, is replacing the bridges in their entirety by the end of November – at no additional cost.

Motorists using I-10 in Tucson are using much-improved bridges at Wilmot Road without having to endure major delays during construction.

During the closures, crews will pump approximately 730 cubic yards of concrete, enough to fill more than 60 dump trucks, into the steel-reinforced deck on the flyover ramp, the longest of five ramps that will be part of the interchange.

Bridge to be closed for four months

While we're replacing decks on three bridges along the route between I-40 and Seligman's west side, there's convenient access from I-40 to the town's east side.
