About AAH

Nearly 23.7 billion pieces of litter are left on 8.3 million miles of roadways across the United States, resulting in an average of 2,855 pieces of litter per mile, or about 73 littered items for every person nationwide.

The Adopt a Highway program offers community members and businesses a chance to help keep our highways free and clean of litter.

Upcoming Volunteer Events

Adopt a Highway Programs

  • The Volunteer Program applies to individuals, families, churches, and other groups who apply for a two-year permit to clean up roadside litter on segments of roadway deemed safe for volunteers.
  • The Sponsor Program applies to individuals and businesses that contract with maintenance providers to clean up roadside litter for a fee. These highways include urban areas that experience a large volume of traffic and litter deemed unsafe for volunteers.

Adopt a Highway volunteers are appreciated

We’re thankful for the approximately 1,570 volunteer groups who currently adopt an Arizona highway. It’s hard to believe, but roughly 335 of the groups have been volunteering for more than 10 years and of those, 50 have been with Adopt a Highway for more than 20 years!

Don't Trash Arizona!

Last month we told you about the thousands who take on the immense task of cleaning up Arizona’s roads through ADOT’s Adopt a Highway program – more than 800 tons of trash is picked up off the state highways each year because of these volunteers!

Adopt a Highway to help maintain Arizona's beauty

It’s a sad truth, but trash thrown onto our state’s roadways really adds up. That’s because it’s not just a few random soda cans, cigarettes or empty bags littering the roads and surrounding areas. In reality, more than 800 tons of trash gets picked up in Arizona each year.
