Project Elements

The purpose of these projects is to extend the life of the roadway and improve the riding surface for drivers. The work includes:

  • Remove and replace the existing top layer of pavement on I-40 between the Arizona-California state line and the junction with SR 95 (mileposts 0 - 8).

Lane restrictions will be limited to overnight hours. No restrictions are anticipated during daytime hours, weekends or state holidays. Business access will be maintained during construction, although there will be brief restrictions when work crosses in front of businesses.

The restrictions include:

  • Intermittent overnight lane restrictions on east- and westbound I-40 from 6 p.m. to 9 a.m. from Sunday evenings through Friday mornings.

  • I-40 will be reduced to one lane in each direction during overnight paving work.

  • There will be times during the project when extended lane restrictions will be required in each direction. ADOT will provide advance notice of the extended lane restrictions.

  • Motorists should plan for extra travel time and be prepared for delays of up to 15 minutes.

  • The speed limit will be reduced in the work zone.

ADOT reminds drivers to proceed slowly through the work zone with caution and watch for construction personnel and equipment while the restrictions are in place.

US 93 Cane Springs Improvement Project

US 93 Cane Springs Improvement Project

US 93 Cane Springs Improvement Project

Map US 93 Cane Springs Improvement Project

Overview

Project Cost: $80.6 million

The Arizona Department of Transportation will begin construction in January 2025 on the US 93 Cane Springs Improvement project north of Wikieup.

Major elements of the project include:

  • Widening a 4-mile segment of US 93 from a two-lane undivided roadway to a 4-lane divided highway between mileposts 106 and 110.
  • Constructing two new bridges over Cane Springs Wash and removing the existing bridge (milepost 109).
  • Improving and/or installing drainage and sediment-control facilities, including culverts, pipes and ditches.
  • Reconstructing the intersection turnout at Upper Trout Creek Road.

Background

This project continues ADOT’s long-term vision of transforming this highly traveled route into a 4-lane divided highway through the entire 200-mile segment of US 93 in Arizona between Wickenburg and the state line.

The US 93 series of projects is a priority for ADOT and has significantly improved the state highway system to move people, goods and services more efficiently.

A draft Environmental Assessment (EA) for the US 93 Wikieup to I-40 project was prepared in June 2000 and a "Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI)" was issued in April 2001. Nine previous roadway widening projects have been completed between Wikieup and I-40.

Need for the project

Improvements are needed to increase capacity of US 93 to meet projected traffic volumes and current design standards.

Construction Timeline

The project is currently in the preconstruction phase. Construction is expected to begin in in early 2025 and be completed in 2026.
