ADOT marks Monsoon Awareness Week

PHOENIX – A wall of dust that towers on the horizon. A heavy downpour of localized rain. These weather occurrences that happen during the monsoon season can rapidly reduce visibility and create unsafe driving conditions.  

With the monsoon season rapidly approaching – officially, it runs June 15-Sept. 30 – ADOT is reminding motorists during Monsoon Awareness Week (June 9-15) how to stay safe and be prepared for the extreme weather that monsoon season brings.

Continuing a much-needed project to improve the ride on 6 miles of I-17 between Happy Valley Road and SR 74, crews removed a top layer of older, worn asphalt pavement before advancing to work to smooth the remaining concrete surface through a process called diamond grinding.

ADOT safety project continues west of Heber-Overgaard
East- and westbound SR 260 traffic is alternating in one lane between Rim Road and Heber-Overgaard (mileposts 282-304) from 5 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays and from 5 a.m. to noon on Fridays. Expect significant delays that become more pronounced as the weekend approaches.

As it has annually since 2014, the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety awarded $72,000 to ADOT’s Crash Records section, which is responsible under state law for creating crash data reports that government agencies, nonprofit groups and others use to improve traffic safety.

The posted detour using the northbound I-17 frontage road moved traffic efficiently throughout the weekend, and ADOT is grateful to drivers who heeded advice to use this route. Law enforcement officers and ADOT personnel were in the area to assist with local-only closures at neighborhood entrances.

ADOT officials, former colleagues and others joined Lindsey’s family in Margaret T. Hance Park, located above the tunnel through which well over 250,000 vehicles pass daily, to unveil a plaque reading “Dean Lindsey I-10 Memorial Tunnel.”
