It’s a reflex for most of us to pick up our phones when we hear the familiar dinging sound that lets us know we have a new text to read.

You might think it’s not that serious to look down at your phone and respond to a text while you’re driving.

But consider this: In 2024, there were 66 fatalities attributed to distracted driving in Arizona.

The Arizona Department of Transportation advises drivers to prepare for lane restrictions along State Route 377 between Holbrook and Heber-Overgaard as a new shoulder widening project starts on Wednesday, April 1.

Drivers should expect the following restrictions from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays:

  • SR 377 will be reduced to one lane only in 2-mile segments with alternating north- and southbound travel between mileposts 8-13.
  • Vehicles will be directed through the work zone by flaggers and a pilot car.
  • A 12-foot vehicle-width restriction will be in place.
  • Drivers need to be prepared to make frequent stops when approaching and driving through the work zone and use caution around construction personnel and equipment while the restrictions are in place.
  • Drivers can also use State Routes 77 and 277 as a detour.
  • No work is scheduled on weekends or state holidays.

The project is anticipated to be completed by the fall.

The Arizona Department of Transportation advises motorists that construction is underway on the US 93 Cane Springs Improvement project located north of Wikieup.

Crews will be working during the next several weeks to clear the work zone in preparation of mobilizing construction equipment to the area. Most of the construction will take place off of US 93 and will have limited impact to motorists. The speed limit will be reduced to allow for heavy equipment to safely access the work zone.

Located approximately 13 miles north of Wikieup, the project will include the following elements:

  • Widening a 4-mile segment of US 93 from a two-lane undivided roadway to a 4-lane divided highway between mileposts 106 and 110.
  • Constructing two new bridges over Cane Springs Wash and removing the existing bridge (milepost 109).
  • Improving and/or installing drainage and sediment-control facilities, including culverts, pipes and ditches.
  • Reconstructing the intersection turnout at Upper Trout Creek Road.

The project is expected to be completed in 2027.

No construction will take place on Fridays, Saturdays or Sundays

An updated schedule of restrictions for an ongoing guardrail replacement project along the State Route 89A switchbacks at the north end of Oak Creek Canyon will start Monday, May 4.

The Arizona Department of Transportation’s project will give drivers a break from restrictions on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

Motorists can expect 24/7 lane restrictions on SR 89A Mondays through Thursdays between Pine Flat Campground and the Oak Creek Vista scenic overlook (mileposts 387-390). Temporary traffic signals in the area will allow traffic to travel through the work zone one direction at a time.

Drivers should allow extra time and expect delays, especially during peak travel hours. A 12-foot vehicle width restriction will remain in effect.

North- and southbound SR 89A lanes will be open Friday through Sunday.

Harding Springs (milepost 387), which many Northern Arizona residents and others use as a water fill station, will be closed from May 4-7 as part of this new schedule.

Drivers who would normally use SR 89A in the switchbacks area should expect long delays Mondays through Thursdays.

The project is replacing older sections of guardrail, reconstructing sections of curb and gutter and installing concrete barriers in some areas. Work is scheduled for completion by late summer (2026).
