PHOENIX – Arizonans can now renew their vehicle registration while shopping at one of the world’s largest retailers.

Through CheckFreePay® from Fiserv, the Arizona Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Division has made it possible for customers to renew vehicle registration with cash or debit at Walmart stores.

“We’re committed to giving customers convenient options to complete their business with MVD,” said Eric Jorgensen, MVD director. “Being able to renew vehicle registration during a trip to Walmart, as well as other grocery and convenience stores, is one more example of our promise to get Arizonans out of line and safely on the road.”

Since MVD engaged Fiserv in November, hundreds of Arizonans have renewed their vehicle registration at various CheckFreePay locations, enjoying the convenience of processing an MVD payment without making a trip to an MVD office.

Customers can renew their vehicle registration at the Walmart Money Center. The last two numbers of their vehicle’s VIN and record number need to be provided and can be found in the registration renewal mailer or email sent to customers. Upon paying, the registration will update instantly in MVD’s system and customers will receive their renewal tab in the mail.

CheckFreePay from Fiserv is the largest processor of walk-in bill payments in the United States, processing more than 75 million transactions in 2019. Visit CheckFreePay.com to search for Arizona Department of Transportation and find a Walmart location near you. A convenience fee of $3 applies to each transaction.

In addition to visiting a CheckFreePay location, MVD customers can continue to renew vehicle registrations online at AZMVDNow.gov or ServiceArizona.com, or visit an Authorized Third Party office.

February 25, 2021

PHOENIX – Renewing a standard Arizona driver license and a commercial driver license can now be completed with a few clicks on a website.

As Governor Doug Ducey’s Executive Order on deferring standard driver license expiration dates ends on Feb. 28, the Arizona Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Division is giving many Arizonans the ability to renew their driver license online. Previously, renewals could only be processed during an office visit.

“Most Arizonans with a standard driver license must renew their license when they turn 65 years of age and every five years thereafter,” ADOT Director John Halikowski said. “During the pandemic, ADOT wants to continue Governor Ducey’s efforts to help protect our most vulnerable and we’re pleased to be able to offer a contactless renewal option so people can continue making healthy choices.”

An in-office visit will be required to renew a standard Arizona driver license if an individual’s photo of record was taken more than 12 years prior to renewal, but most Arizonans will be able to renew their driver license without visiting an MVD office. Driver license-holders can log-in to their account at AZMVDNow.gov to see their eligibility for online renewal.

To renew a CDL online at AZMVDNow.gov, an individual’s address must remain the same, a valid primary document is on file with MVD and their current credential must be in good standing. CDL holders with a hazmat endorsement will not be able to renew their license online.

This new, streamlined renewal option was made possible, in large part, when MVD implemented a state-of-the-art computer operating system last spring. That change replaced an obsolete system that contained elements that were older than 35 years and no longer sustainable. The new system has made it possible for MVD to offer customers the ability to complete most services online at AZMVDNow.gov, eliminating the need to visit an MVD office for many Arizonans.

“We’ve all seen a lot of change over the last year, but this is something new that everyone can embrace,” MVD Director Eric Jorgensen said. “The website AZMVDNow.gov has added convenience for customers and made it easier for Arizonans to conduct their business with MVD. Adding driver license renewals to the long list of other services, like registration renewals, change of address and ordering a replacement license, will help keep Arizonans out of line and safely on the road.”

When renewing online, an individual’s official driver record will be updated with the new expiration date in the MVD system when the application and payment are submitted electronically.

When it comes time to renew a driver license, individuals can follow the below steps to renew online.

  • Go to AZMVDNow.gov and sign-in to your account. If you need to activate your account – everyone with an Arizona driver license has an account – follow those steps.
  • After logging in, select “Renew Now” in the “My Credential” section and follow the instructions.
  • Allow about 15 days for processing and mail delivery of your new driver license.

PHOENIX – More than 1.5 million Arizonans have discovered the safest, fastest and most convenient way to complete services with the Arizona Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Division.

Since launching in April 2020, more than 1.5 million Arizonans have activated their free AZMVDNow.gov account, giving them access to the primary online portal for MVD customers.

“Today, more than ever, people are looking for contactless transactions and AZMVDNow.gov does that and so much more.” MVD Director Eric Jorgensen said. “With the AZ MVD Now portal, MVD offers more web-based services than ever before with more levels of security and that’s a big win for Arizonans.”

Here’s are some of the thing you can do with your AZ MVD Now account:

  • Go online and schedule your own in-office MVD appointments.
  • View information related to your vehicle, including title status, registration status, and MVD service history.
  • Complete more than 30 services, like registration renewals, ordering a duplicate license, change of address, update insurance, title transfers, sold notices and more.

Every Arizonan with a credential – a driver license or identification card – or a vehicle registered in Arizona has an AZ MVD Now account. To activate the account, go to AZMVDNow.gov and follow the prompts. AZ MVD Now accounts are free and protected by several security protocols that are explained on the site and in an accompanying “how to” video.

PHOENIX – When commercial truckers purchase their permits for driving through Arizona online ahead of time or use a cashless method at the port of entry, they spend less time making payments and get on their way faster.

That’s one reason the Arizona Department of Transportation successfully implemented a pilot program to move to a fully-cashless permitting system. Now, after working with trucking companies that pay with cash to ensure they have enough time to convert to a cashless system, ADOT’s ports of entry intend to go fully cashless on Jan. 1, 2021.

The move to end the acceptance of cash and checks at ports of entry also supports recommendations by the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention to curb the spread of COVID-19 through the exchange of currency.

ADOT’s truck permitting systems, ePro and Transport, have cashless features and nearly 80% of truckers getting permits use those features. But in order to help trucks move through the ports more efficiently, ADOT’s Enforcement and Compliance Division began to encourage the other 20% of truckers to pay for permits online using Apple Pay, Android Pay or credit card.

“We have been getting a feel from the trucking industry on how much they would support this change and the feedback has been positive,” said Lt. Jason Sloan, team lead for implementing the change. “This improvement will help eliminate waste and maximize resources available at ports of entry to process commercial traffic faster.”

The move also allows more officers to be available for enforcement duties instead of having one or more of them make a long drive from a remote port of entry to a financial institution to deposit the cash and checks collected.

This change is one more way ADOT’s continuous improvement process is making more efficient use of time, resources and taxpayer dollars. It will also be implemented at VIN inspection stations around the state.

ADOT is also developing a new commercial permitting system that will support the move to cashless and touchless that is expected to be operational by the end of next year.

PHOENIX – Several major bridge and intersection replacement projects in southern Arizona presented a big challenge for the Arizona Department of Transportation in 2020: How to replace existing structures or entire interchanges without closing highways on projects that last up to two years.

The agency applied several innovative approaches to do just that, keeping passenger vehicles and commerce moving while minimizing potentially disruptive restrictions and closures.

Drivers are benefiting from the strategies at several key projects: The Interstate 10/Houghton Road interchange in Tucson, the Pinto Creek Bridge replacement on US 60 near Globe, a bridge replacement project on SR 77 in Winkelman, and the I-10/Ruthrauff Road interchange replacement project in Tucson.

The I-10/Houghton Road interchange project in Tucson began in August, a project that involves replacing a two-lane Houghton Road bridge with a six-lane diverging diamond interchange, along with rebuilding all ramps. While replacing an interchange sometimes requires extensive closures, ADOT will complete this project with only a three-month closure of two ramps - both of which have already reopened. The other two ramps and bridge are being constructed next to the existing lanes of traffic, and traffic will eventually shift to the new pavement. For the remainder of the project, only overnight closures are anticipated as traffic flows through the busy work zone.

On US 60 between Globe and Superior, ADOT has been working since late 2019 to replace the 70-year old Pinto Creek bridge in an area with rugged terrain and hour-long detours around any highway closures. However, the project required months of blasting that could only occur when US 60 was closed. ADOT’s solution was to limit closures to four hours at the same time and on the same three days of the week, ensuring motorists had a predictable schedule to plan their travels. Since the blasting wrapped up earlier this year, the highway has remained open while the project team works on the new bridge next to the existing structure. A five-day closure is anticipated toward the end of the project in 2021 as crews realign the road to the new bridge.

In Winkelman, ADOT is working to replace the two-lane SR 77 bridge over the Gila River without closing it or shifting the highway. Crews are able to do this by essentially cutting the bridge in half and rebuilding one side of the structure at a time. Since the project began in late 2019, traffic has continued to use the bridge, restricted to one direction at a time as a temporary signal regulates which direction can proceed. Delays are generally less than 15 minutes, with occasionally longer delays for two weeks at a time when new bridge girders have been set into place. The new bridge will open by summer 2021 without any extended closures of SR 77.

At I-10 and Ruthrauff Road, one of the most heavily traveled segments of the Interstate in Tucson, ADOT has been working since January to replace a 60-year-old interchange without closing the highway. ADOT has maintained three lanes of travel in each direction during peak hours with several traffic shifts onto either the frontage road or newly rebuilt lanes of I-10. While the interchange has been closed most of 2020 and the project won’t be complete until late 2021, ADOT has made it a priority to reopen Ruthrauff/El Camino del Cerro across I-10 by summer 2021 to minimize the impact of the project even as other elements of the project will remain under construction. Also, ADOT’s contract with Sundt Construction encourages an aggressive construction schedule with an early completion incentive for finishing the project 40 days sooner than the contractor’s specified completion date. The goal is to only have the interchange closed for the 2020 holiday travel season and open again before the holidays in 2021.

Customers can now go to the web and schedule an in-office appointment for any service at Arizona Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Division offices. Previously, in-office appointments could be scheduled online for a selection of transactions.

“MVD is excited to give customers the ability to schedule their own in-office appointments at their convenience,” said MVD Director Eric Jorgensen. “This streamlines the process of setting up an MVD appointment."

Customers can schedule in-office appointments at AZMVDNow.gov, the primary online portal for MVD customers. After logging in, users can navigate to “Schedule an Appointment” and choose from the six options listed: Travel ID, ID/Driver License Renewal, Instruction Permit, Road Test, Motorcycle Road Test and Additional Services.

Through CheckFreePay® from Fiserv, the Arizona Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Division is giving customers another convenient option to renew their vehicle’s registration.

“We’re constantly looking for solutions that give customers more options to complete transactions with MVD at their convenience,” said MVD Director Eric Jorgensen. “CheckFreePay is another convenient, easy way to renew a registration that some customers will appreciate.”

Sometimes, being pointed in the right direction is all the help we need. And the new Chatbot at AZMVDNow.gov does exactly that for Arizona Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Division customers.

Need to change your address? Chatbot will show you the way.

Looking for information about a “sold notice"? Chatbot can assist.

Want to make an appointment at an MVD office? Chatbot provides the details.

“By necessity, there’s a lot of information on the MVD website,” said ADOT MVD Director Eric Jorgensen. “Our goal in creating Chatbot was to make it easier for people to find the right information, so they can quickly complete their transaction.”

In its first week of being active on AZMVDNow.gov, Chatbot had 26,000 interactions with users, helping them find the information they needed. At AZMVDNow.gov, Chatbot appears on the bottom of the page on a mobile device and in the bottom-right corner on a computer screen.

To complete some MVD transactions online, users must log-in to their account at AZMVDNow.gov, which launched in April. More than two-thirds of all MVD transactions can be completed at AZMVDNow.gov, including common ones, like registration renewal, requesting a replacement license, updating insurance information, sold notices, 3-day permits, getting a motor vehicle record and many more.

Every current MVD customer has an AZMVDNow account. To date, about 1.5 million people have activated their account. To activate your free account, go to AZMVDNow.gov and follow the prompts.

September 28, 2020

PHOENIX – So, you’ve purchased a vehicle, completed the registration and title information, and received your tabs in the mail. But when will the title arrive?

Actually, there’s no reason to worry because your vehicle’s title information has been there all along – safely in electronic form and accessible in your free AZ MVD Now account, which all current Arizona MVD customers have.

Earlier this year, the Arizona Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Division began maintaining all customers' vehicle titles electronically. This change is paired with a similar process where physical items like registration tabs and license plates are mailed to a customer’s home and aren’t provided at MVD or Authorized Third Party offices.

Customers who desire a paper title can go to AZMVDNow.gov, log in to their account, click on “Title Replacement,” submit the $4 processing fee and a PDF of their Arizona Title Summary will instantly appear in their AZ MVD Now account. This allows them to download and print the title information at their convenience. MVD will also mail the paper title to the customer’s address.

More than two-thirds of MVD services, including title replacements, are available through AZ MVD Now. They include popular options such as registration renewal, ordering a duplicate license, getting a 3-day permit, updating insurance information, ordering a motor vehicle record and many more.

Activating an AZ MVD Now account takes just a few minutes. Every current MVD customer already has an account with their driver and vehicle information that’s waiting to be activated. Customers may go to azmvdnow.gov and follow the prompts for how to activate their account. The process is free and is protected by several security protocols that are explained on the site and in an accompanying “how-to” video for those who wish to view it.

Unless you’re in the service of issuing driver licenses, vehicle titles and registrations, you probably haven’t heard of the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators. But if you are, like the thousands of people working at the Arizona Motor Vehicle Division, the AAMVA Awards are a pretty big deal.

And Arizona’s MVD was a big winner again in the 2020 AAMVA Awards, winning two awards in the national contest.

“I’m excited for all the people who work at MVD when their efforts result in awards and recognition for their creative and thoughtful solutions,” said MVD Director Eric Jorgensen. “One of our core principles is to always be looking for ways to improve a process, reduce the time people need to get a service from us and make things easier for everyone. Every day, we’re striving to become more efficient in order to get Arizonans out of line and safely on the road.”

MVD’s online Travel ID Document Guide was recognized in the Interactive Presentation category for Public Affairs and Consumer Education. This online tool simplifies the  process of learning what documents are required to obtain a REAL ID. The step-by-step guide condenses the necessary information into easy-to-read instructions.

MVD’s recent adoption of virtual inspections of Authorized Third Party offices earned it an award in the Improvement Through Efficiencies category. MVD performs regular inspections of these businesses and some are in remote locations, requiring as much as a 12-hour round trip drive. In 2018, inspectors began using Apple’s FaceTime on a trial basis. The virtual inspections were so successful that the program became fully functional in 2019, saving hours of driving time and reducing expenses.

“AAMVA is always so proud to recognize the excellent work our members do for the communities they serve,” said AAMVA President & CEO Anne Ferro. “Through their efforts, MVDs and law enforcement agencies make drivers and vehicles safer, identities secure, and ultimately, save lives.”
