Overview

The 26-mile Wild Horse Pass Corridor, part of Interstate 10 from Loop 202 in south Phoenix to State Route 387 near Casa Grande, serves as a crucial commuter and freight link, connecting the Gila River Indian Community to essential services in Maricopa and Pinal Counties.

To enhance safety and alleviate congestion, ADOT and partners plan to add a general-purpose lane in each direction from Loop 202 to State Route 387, creating three lanes in each direction between Phoenix and Tucson. Additionally, HOV lanes will be extended from Loop 202 to Riggs Road.

Final Environmental Assessment

The Final Environmental Assessment has been prepared and will be made available to the public for 30 days. After this 30-day period, in approximately April of this year, ADOT is anticipated to sign the Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI). The Arizona Department of Transportation prepared a Final Environmental Assessment (EA) in compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and a Final Design Concept Report (DCR) for the project which can be reviewed at the links provided.

  improvingi17.com

The 23-mile section of Interstate 17 (I-17) between Anthem Way and Sunset Point is one of the most heavily utilized roadways in Arizona, seeing more than 1 million travelers each year.

Currently, I-17 has two travel lanes in each direction between Anthem Way, north of Phoenix, and Flagstaff. The highway passes through rolling terrain in the southern and northern segments and mountainous terrain with steep, narrow lanes between Black Canyon City and Sunset Point.

We look forward to improving this stretch of I-17 north of Phoenix. The work includes widening 15 miles of roadway, replacing two bridges and widening 10 others, and constructing approximately eight miles of flex lanes.

Queen Creek Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Project

Overview

The project will implement intelligent transportation system (ITS) infrastructure in several corridors in the town of Queen Creek. These improvements will provide additional technology to manage traffic to improve safety and efficiency. This project is a partnership between ADOT and the town of Queen Creek.

Project Elements

The work consists of installation of fiber optic cabling, Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras, connecting fiber to existing traffic signals and other related work.

What to Expect

  • Construction is expected to begin in April 2025 and take approximately seven months to complete.
  • Initial work will be done off the roadway, and drivers may see crews working in some locations on the sidewalks. Work requiring traffic control is expected to begin in June when fiber optic installation begins.
  • Work will be phased in smaller sections of the corridors, requiring lane restrictions in those areas. Some work may take place at night. Any lane restrictions necessary during the day will be scheduled between 8:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.
  • Advance notice of restrictions and closures will be communicated through the project webpage and the town’s communication channels.
  • Access to businesses and residences will be maintained.

Riggs Road Traffic Interchange at SR 347

Riggs Road Traffic Interchange at SR 347

Overview

This project, now in the final design stage, will reconstruct the existing intersection to separate SR 347 from Riggs Road traffic on a new bridge.

The purpose of the project is to provide free-flowing traffic movements along SR 347 as it passes Riggs Road, based on the need to reduce traffic congestion, travel times and crash rates at the intersection, which will ultimately enhance regional mobility.

The project is a partnership between the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT), the Gila River Indian Community and the Maricopa Association of Governments (MAG), in coordination with the Bureau of Indian Affairs.

Background

The project originated with a study conducted by MAG on the SR 347 Corridor, which identified the need to separate SR 347 from Riggs Road traffic. Further study was done by ADOT, which evaluated alternatives for the interchange design. More information on the project scoping done in the study phase can be found below in the Public Involvement section

Selected Alternative

Following extensive agency and public involvement to seek input on potential design concept alternatives for the interchange, which included public meetings in August 2024, the project team selected the design alternative to move forward. More information about the interchange design, which was presented at the public meetings as Alternative B1, is provided below.

Riggs Road interchange alternative B1 - tight diamond

B1

The interchange will feature a tight diamond design where the on-and-off ramps are in a diamond shape.

The key elements of this design are:

  • SR 347 traffic will travel on a new bridge over Riggs Road, which will remain at grade level.
  • SR 347 will be shifted to the east and Riggs Road will be shifted to the south to avoid the Gila River Indian Community electrical substation.
  • SR 347 will have two lanes in each direction.
  • The project will be designed and constructed to allow for future widening to three lanes in each direction.
  • Riggs Road will have two lanes in each direction, as well as a left-turn and right-turn lane in each direction to access SR 347.

More information about the alternatives considered and the evaluation criteria can be found in the Project Documents section below.

Public Involvement

ADOT and its project partners held two in-person meetings in August 2024 to present and seek input on proposed improvements to the Riggs Road Traffic Interchange at SR 347, as well as the SR 347 corridor widening project.

The meetings were held in the city of Maricopa and the Gila River Indian Community to provide an opportunity for Community members to give input and ask questions about the project.

Overview

The Arizona Department of Transportation, in partnership with the Maricopa County Department of Transportation and the town of Gilbert, is planning improvements to Mews Road between Higley Road and 172nd Street. These improvements include:

  • Paving Mews Road from Higley Road to just west of 172nd Street
  • Constructing a drainage channel on the southside of Mews Road
  • Installing a new 36-inch concrete storm drain pipe east of the Higley/Mews roads intersection
  • Pouring new sidewalk and ramps at the Mews/Higley roads intersection
  • Constructing new curb, gutters and residential driveways

Construction is expected to begin in spring 2025 and take approximately six months.

Project Area Map

Project Map - Mews Road, Higley to 172nd Street Paving Project

What to Expect

Construction hours will be Monday through Friday 5 a.m. to 3 p.m. (no weekend work is expected). Temporary access restrictions will be required during the following activities:

  • Earthwork and paving in front of driveways
  • Reconstruction of driveways
  • After concrete work to allow adequate time for concrete to cure. Curing can take several days depending on weather conditions.

Information for Property Owners

If you own or rent a property on Mews Road between Higley Road and 172nd Street, access to your property will be impacted during construction.

To minimize these impacts, access restrictions will only occur on one half of the street at a time. While these restrictions are in place, you will not be able to access your driveway. If you wish to use your vehicle(s) during access restrictions, they must be parked elsewhere.
